Severus didn’t like surprises. He’d had enough for one lifetime, ranging from unpleasant to life-threatening. Now the war was over, and he wanted peace and quiet, not chaos, peril, and bloody awful surprises. He didn’t even want a damned card on his birthday; he wanted to be left alone.

As usual, he didn’t get what he wanted. He answered a knock to find Lupin on his doorstep, holding a cake and wearing strategically placed green ribbon.

“Surprise!” Lupin offered Severus both the cake and the end of the ribbon.

Severus decided it was time to rethink his stance on surprises.

Normally, Severus dismissed St. Mungo's potions as amateurish swill, but not this time. He rolled his head on the pillow, blinking owlishly at the person in the next bed.

"You're still alive."

Lupin smiled calmly. "I could say the same of you. Congratulations, by the way."

"On being alive?"

"On being a hero."

Severus stared up at the ceiling. "Huh." His mind wandered off. "I don't half fancy you."

Later, he blamed the pain potion, claiming to have been out of his head when he made the declaration, but since it gained him a lusty werewolf, he didn't mind.

Remus tugged his hand, leading him back to Market Street. Severus turned a baleful eye on a shop called "Lollipop Cottage", but Remus ignored it.

"See? It's self-contained. There are restaurants, shops, and a cinema. There's even a hospital. I know you aren't keen on living with Muggles, but Celebration is such a nice place."

"I don't care!" The words burst out of Severus at last. "I'm not living anywhere that's owned by an animated mouse!"

Remus slumped in his chair and let the conversation wash over him. Christmas at The Burrow was about like he expected, and he wasn't certain why he had been invited other than it gave Molly an excuse to "subtly" encourage him to give in to Tonks.

Celestina Warbeck wailed about "hot, strong love", and Remus closed his eyes, resting his cheek on his fist as he thought about Severus spending Christmas with Pettigrew, who was the main reason why they hadn't been able to meet often these past few months.

Without Severus, Remus didn't feel much like celebrating at all.
