Not long after Harry and Ron had left Spinner's End, Hermione arrived. Remus provided her with a cup of tea, unable to forgo that concession to politeness, and then spoke before she could.

"I'm not one of your oppressed house-elves, Hermione," he told her firmly. "I can make my own decisions; I don't need you to protect me. Severus and I don't need your approval. I thought you of all people would understand that."

"You're right, Remus," Hermione replied. "Anyway, let's forget about that. I've brought a housewarming cake and I suspect it will go very well with this tea."

"You don't talk much, do you, Severus?"

"Pass the doxie venom."

"That doesn't count. It's not my fault Slughorn decided to change the class-pairings."

"Are you holding my hand, Lupin?"

"Er, no. I just thought you were passing me the wrong sort of, um, spoon."

"It's not a 'spoon', it's a silver ladle. No wonder you're so terrible at potions, if you're afraid of handling the stirring implements."

"I'm not. It's -"

"Are you blushing, Lupin?"

"No!"

"What do I care if you're a queer who's afraid of silver ladles?"

"I'm not!"

"Stop fussing. Your secret is safe with me."
