Both were in check –again. Death banished their kings leaving a white knight and a black queen.
“Also fond of the expendable I see.”

“Fair play.” Severus woke propped up against a lorry, chess pieces in hand.

“Oi! You’re either loading the lorry or fucking right off! You lot are all expendable!”

“Done, is the paperwork?”

“Lorry. Aysgarth. Now. Take your white knight here.” Severus took the papers.

“Chess pieces?” Remus laughed.

“Death has a sense of humor.” Severus snorted, handing Remus the knight as he pocked queen.

“The white knight drives.” His heart flipped when Remus opened his door.

Of course Remus is driving! How wonderful to Severus is willing to cede control.

Well, he is royalty after all :D Plus I think he'd agree that having Remus stick up for him and then taking him off into the sunset is well worth all that control.

Thank you so much for commenting - I hadn't thought about the control aspect of it and it makes me like this drabble a lot more.
