You never expected the pain to be this intense, this all-consuming, to endure so long.
You’ve had plenty of experience of pain over the years, in all its forms. You think of pain bitterly, sardonically, as almost an old friend, these days, one whose voice may change according to his mood but will always be familiar to you, who know him so well.
You’d never heard him scream like that before, though.
But when you look at your lover and you see the pride in his eyes as he holds his newborn daughter, you know that it was all worthwhile.
