They stood on the steps, watching the carriages bringing the students to the castle.

 

“When were you first able to see the Thestrals?”

 

“I could always see them, Severus. Evidently, becoming a werewolf brought me close enough to death. You?”

 

“Seventh year, after I had taken the Dark Mark. I had lost my innocence.”

 

Remus gasped. “Severus, I’m so sorry I didn’t know there was a sexual ritual involved.”

 

“Don’t be an idiot, Lupin. Not that innocence. That innocence I still bear.”

 

Remus gaped at the proud, broody man next to him. He vowed, he would help to change that.
