Title: Compensation
Challenge: trust
Word count: 100
Note: this is a mini-sequel to New York Minute, wherein Remus was caught in the 9/11 attacks. This is set about two years later.
Sleet spat against the darkened windows as Severus unlocked the front door. Remus sat huddled by the fire, a bottle of whisky at his side. Severus could tell from the doorway that he was not drunk. "Remus?"
"They sent me a cheque." Remus waved at the sideboard. "I don't want it."
"Who sent you a cheque?"
"The Victims' Compensation Fund." Remus poured himself another drink. "I don't deserve it."
Severus examined the cheque. It was more than he made in a decade. "You could put it in a trust for war victims."
Remus closed his eyes. "I'll think about it."
