Remus hated it when they fought. Severus had calmed considerably since the War, but he could still work himself into a frenzy with alarming speed.

But this silence was worse. Remus wasn't sure what he'd done, but Severus had not done more than grunt at him for hours. Was he angry? Would he move out?

Finally he snapped. "Severus. Whatever it is, talk to me."

Severus flinched. "I thought you liked the quiet."

"I do! But not talking to me - "

"It's her birthday." Severus nodded toward the photo of Tonks. "I didn't think it my place - "

Remus groaned. "Severus. I'm sorry she's gone, but I chose you. I'd already talked to a solicitor about a divorce before the battle."

Severus' lips parted. "You - "

"We had a son, but we never truly had a marriage. I think she knew that, at the end." Remus held out his hand. "Note that I'm not wearing black, and I've been trying to talk to you all day."

Severus hesitantly twined his fingers through Remus'. "I did not understand. I - I apologize."

"Apology accepted." Remus gave his hands a squeeze. "Now tell me about your day."

Severus did.

“Anyway, I got you these. Rather scraggy, I’m afraid, they’ll probably fade within a day, but they’re the best that over-priced florist in Hogsmeade could provide.”

Kneeling, Severus placed the flowers carefully against the modest headstone, and apparated away.
