As Severus watched his lover sleep, he thought about everything they’d gone through to end up together. All the misunderstandings, the arguments, the years of war and pain, of hating and fearing, of sadness and longing, of silence when words weren’t possible and, sadder still, of silence when words between them were so badly needed.

Perhaps all that turmoil had made them stronger, but even though their eventual union felt like a sweet victory over the past, he couldn’t help but think wistfully of all the time they’d lost and wish that they’d been able to walk a smoother path.
