His mother had a saying “Every new day brings a new beginning”; it had become Lupin’s mantra, his fervent prayer.

When the door was flung open, he said “Please, Severus, I know I should have had more faith in you, I know I fucked up.” 

Taking courage from the fact the door had not yet been slammed in his face, Lupin added, “I love you.  I’ve never loved anyone but you.”

Unable to say anything more, silenced by the weight of loss and despair, Lupin began to turn away.

“Are those freshly-baked scones?”

New-found joy stuttered an erratic beat in his chest; another day, a new beginning.

New Beginnings.

Remus hates the taste of wolfsbane.  When he sees Snape, stalking around the corridors or glaring in the Great Hall, Remus is reminded of the bitter-sour-bile-aftertaste, a foulness on the tongue seemingly resistant to all attempts to sweeten the flavor.

 “I’ve made changes”, Snape tells him one full moon.  “It will be as efficacious as the original formula”.

Already grimacing in anticipation of that taste, Remus cautiously sips, swallows and then gulps the entire dose.  “Why, Severus, that’s marvelous”, he enthused, “Like chocolate and firewhiskey.”

An almost-smile crossed the potion-master’s face as he softly said, “I’ve been working on it for some time, Remus; for years, in fact.”
