It had been a mistake, Severus mused, to leave the bureau drawer unlocked, so that his lover’s letters might be found with the most perfunctory of searches. It had been a bigger mistake to invite said lover to their house, to leave traces of his presence – a dirty cup in the kitchen, a blond hair upon the pillow.
It had been the biggest mistake of all, Severus thought, to be caught in flagrante, having relied upon a message excusing a late homecoming.
All foolish, avoidable errors. But Severus comforted himself, drawing his wand: Remus would not be making them again.
