The Collar

 

“What’s wrong with it?”  Lupin asked.  “It can keep me from transforming.  I won’t be a threat any longer.”

 

Snape was already trying to unlatch the narrow collar that encircled Lupin’s throat.  He couldn’t, it was fused shut. 

 

“Are you so eager to be accepted that you’ll let yourself be marked like a criminal or a slave by the Ministry of Magic?”  Snape asked.  “After everything you’ve done for them?  Let me take it off.”  He raised his wand with a trembling hand.

 

“Please, Severus, don’t.  Leave it.  I’m not like you.  I can’t live with the world against me.”
